A Data Quality Blunder!

Martin Doyle December 8th, 2011 Data Quality

We recently stumbled across this unintended data quality error as a result of what should have been a simple data processing task.

The task was to remove “The” from a string as the target field was too small to receive the data. They unwittingly removed “The” from anywhere in the string, so, rather than just at the start and removing “The” for example “The Weather Channel”, they removed it from anywhere in the name and the following ensued..

Before After
Physical Therapist Physical rapist
Speech Therapist Speech rapist
Child Therapist Child rapist
Group Therapist Group rapist
Psycho Therapist Psycho rapist
Occupational Therapist Occupational rapist
Play Therapist Play rapist
Family Therapist Family rapist
Massage Therapist Massage rapist
Trauma Therapist Trauma rapist
