When it comes to data quality improvement, I believe you must take the approach a doctor might take, in that you must diagnose before you prescribe.

To plan any data migration journey you must know both where you are and where you are going. Mostly in data migration we know where we want to get too. Often the hardest part is knowing where we are?

I believe that's why data audits, and in complex projects data profiling, are so valuable. Once you have assessed and understood the data content by passing it through the equivalent of an MRI, you are in a position to assess its health, and therefore the effort required to make the data fit for migration.
